Reading Classes -
We will be wrapping up our autobiographies (7A - "I Prove Myself A Hunter," 7B/C - "The Noble Experiment") with a quiz on Tuesday. We will then begin reading a personal essay (7A - "Little Things are Big," 7B/C - "Names/Nombres"). We will be discussing the characteristics of an essay and the various purposes for writing.

Writing Classes-
There are NO SPELLING WORDS this week. We are taking a break to catch up with grammar lessons - simple subjects and predicates (including verb phrases). We are also continuing the biography writing assignment by completing an outline and developing a claim.

Reading-
7A Reading will be completing "I Prove Myself a Hunter." We will also practice predicting (along with the other reading strategies). I expect we will be ready for the quiz by the end of the week.
7B/C Reading - Individually and in small groups, we will be reading and completing "The Noble Experiment." We will practice clarifying (summarizing) through a guided activity.

Writing-
All classes - New spelling words (see below) focus on the "i before e" rule. This is straight-forward spelling, not usage problems as in past lists. Students will be conducting their biography interviews this week, both inside and outside of class. Interviews are due on Friday. Finally, we will be studying simple subjects and simple predicates in grammar. Expect a brief grammar quiz next week.

7A Reading - We will be wrapping up our biography, "Amelia Earhart," with a quiz on Wednesday. We will then begin reading our next nonfictin selection, an autobiography called "I Prove Myself a Hunter." This autobiography recounts the true life of an Eskimo who loses his leg in an accident but must overcome his disability in order to hunt and prove himself to his people.
7B/C Reading - We will also be wrapping up our biography, "Eleanor Roosevelt," with a quiz on Wednesday. We will then begin reading our next nonfictin selection, an excerpt from Jackie Robinson's autobiography, "The Noble Experiment." In this selection, Robinson recounts how Branch Rickey selected him to be the player who would integrate Major League Baseball.

Writing Classes - Students will receive their first major writing assignment, which will be a mini-biography on a classmate. Please read over the requirements and sign the topic/contract (task 1) sheet and return it to school by Thursday, October 8. We will discuss the 6(+1) Traits of Writing and how they will affect the way the writing assignment will be assessed. Finally, we will continue with our grammar lessons, moving onto Simple Subjects and Simple Predicates. This week, students are on Spelling List #3 (see below). The test will be given next Monday, October 12, as there is no school this Friday.

Test Date: MONDAY, October 12 - There is no school for students this Friday, October 9.

As with previous tests, this spelling test may also include spelling words from previous lists. Spelling require memorization, and true memorization requires repetition. Please help your child to learn and practice both new and old spelling words.

Reading:
7A - Students will be reading "Amelia Earhart" in their Bridges books. We will be concentrating on the characteristics of biographies and the looking for main ideas versus details in our texts. Students will also take notes, practicing the different reading strategies in their logs.
7B/C - Students will be reading "Eleanor Roosevelt" in their L.O.L. books. We will be concentrating on the characteristics of biographies and recognizing author claims in texts. We will also study chronological order.

Writing-
All Classes - Students are on List #2 spelling words, which will be tested on Friday, October 2. We will begin our first grammar lesson on the sentence and its parts. We will also review and discuss the 6 (+1) traits of writing and the writing process. Students will receive their first writing assignment, which will be a short but descriptive biography.

Attention Parents, Caregivers, & Students:
1) There will be a Physical Education uniform this year for school. Your child will be required to change into this uniform before P.E. class. You will receive additional information in the coming days regarding this change.

2) New this year to the school are lockers. Each student is required to bring to school a combination or key lock. Students will also be required to submit the combination number or a duplicate key to their homeroom teachers before gaining access to the lockers.

2009-2010: The Best School Year Yet!

Hello & Welcome to the 2009-2010 School Year!

This school year at Providence Creek Academy Charter School promises to be the most exciting year yet! With our newly-built school and new facilities, our charter school truly reflects the caliber of student that we teach - simply, the BEST! Students and staff alike look forward to the first day of school, which will be on Tuesday, September 8.

There are many changes and challenges ahead this year. I hope to work with each of you to help your child succeed. In previous years, I sent a daily email to parents with a description of the day’s activities and homework assignments. Many parents felt that this “service” was quite helpful and informative. I plan to continue, so please send me an email at elambert@pca.k12.de.us if you would like to be on the email list.

You will receive a more in-depth description of my grading policies and expectations shortly, which I will also post on this website. For the time being, if you have any questions, please feel free to call me at the school or to email me. As your 7th grade student’s Reading and Writing teacher, I look forward to providing the knowledge and experiences that your child will need to better his/her future. I have very high expectations for all my students, because I know that you have high expectations for them as well. I'm looking forward to meeting you and your children. I hope, together, we can make this the most rewarding year yet for your child.

In addition to the school supply list provided by the school, I ask that each student bring 2 two-pocket folders (with braids for securing paper) for Reading and Writing classes. These folders will be for classroom use and will remain in my room for the year. Thank you.

Donations to the Classroom

It is no secret that the success of a student and of a school rests upon the support received from parents and caregivers. Personally, I consider myself truly lucky to have met and worked with such cooperative and caring parents. Many parents have asked if they can help by donating needed or often used items. My answer is a resounding "YES!" If you have the means, I would truly appreciate donations of the following items:

Boxes of tissue

Paper towels
Wipes (sanitizing/cleaning)
Poster board

Filler or computer paper

Pens/pencils ("junky" ones are just fine)

Markers

AND YOU!! If you'd like to come into class and help out one day, we would love to have you!

Of course, anything else that you wish to donate would be useful and appreciated. I'm always surprised at the things I use and need throughout the year. I thank you for your on-going support.
